$138,391 - $145,041 per annum

About this role

Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer Public Health, the Health Policy Advisor works on public policy issues related to the health of Aboriginal people. The Health Policy Advisor will draft high quality policy papers, briefings, reports, submissions, fact sheets and other public communications. The role includes working with key stakeholders to achieve joint goals in advocacy i.e. addressing the broader social determinants of Aboriginal health as well as the health system.

 

The Health Policy Advisor will also provide high-level secretariat support to Congress’ CEO and Executive Management Team which includes coordinating the preparation of meeting papers, taking minutes and ensuring there are strong and accountable processes for recording actions and decisions.

 

This position will support the initiatives Congress is undertaking to achieve its strategic plan, within a dynamic Aboriginal community controlled comprehensive primary health care service that's making a real difference in Aboriginal health.

 

This opportunity is ideal for someone who wants to further develop their skills in health policy specifically in Aboriginal health, including critical analysis skills and using research evidence and data to inform policy, and also understands the issues impacting upon the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people. This position may require some travel, including to remote communities and will require some out-of-hours’ work.

 

To be considered for this position, you will require:

 

  • Tertiary qualifications in social science, health sciences, public health, political science, or relevant area.
  • An understanding of health and social policy and government processes, government departments and authorities, and policy frameworks as they relate to Aboriginal people.
  • Experience in providing efficient and effective secretariat support for a high-level decision-making forum (e.g. Board, executive management team or policy-making forum).
  • Understanding of the broader determinants of health that effect Aboriginal people at a population level.
  • The capability to develop policy documents using research evidence and data, for a broad range of audiences.
  • Experience in or capability to support organisational planning and reporting processes, including KPI reporting to the Board
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively with management and staff across the organisation, external partners and stakeholders, and with Aboriginal people in particular.
  • Willingness, ability and appropriate levels of health and fitness to travel to and work from remote locations when required.
