About the role

 

The Occupational Therapist provides culturally-responsive high-quality occupational therapy services for Aboriginal children, youth and their families to optimise their child’s development. The position supports children and youth living with a range of disabilities, particularly neurodevelopmental disabilities including Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder. This role is specific to the provision of assessment and therapeutic supports to National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants.

 

Services are delivered through the NDIS as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside speech pathology, physiotherapy and Aboriginal Family Support Workers (AFSW). The Occupational Therapist works in close partnership with the Child and Youth Assessment and Therapeutic Service (CYATS), NDIS Coordinators of Support and other internal and external medical and allied health specialists.

 

The Occupational Therapist supports NDIS participants to optimise the development of emotional, cognitive, motor and social skills to maximise participation in home, school and community environments. The Occupational Therapist fosters self-determination of families and carers by facilitating choice and control over service delivery.

 

The role is primarily based in Mparntwe (Alice Springs); occasional remote travel may be a requirement of this position.

 

The ideal candidate will be a person with:

  • Bachelor of Occupational Therapy or equivalent qualification and current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) with a minimum of two years of clinical experience.
  • Experience working with a neurodevelopmental caseload in a community based Occupational Therapy service within a multidisciplinary team, including working with a broad range of clients from varying socioeconomic backgrounds .
  • Flexible and creative approach to providing occupational therapy services that is responsive to the needs of the community.
  • Ability to partner with service users, including them in goal setting, care planning and care co-ordination to identify priorities.
  • Willingness, ability and appropriate levels of health and fitness to travel to and work from remote locations.
  • An understanding of the historical and contemporary context of Aboriginal health, the social determinants of health, and the philosophy and practice of Aboriginal Community Control.
  • Current NT Driver Licence or equivalent.
